Sarah Thomas – Carissa Turner advance into Women’s Doubles final at Polish Open 2012
Sarah Thomas and Carissa Turner, the most promising players from Wales, landed a title berth after working extra hard in Women’s Doubles semi-final battle when they narrowly defeated their lower ranked challengers Sophie Brown and Helena Lewczynska of England
at the Polish Open 2012 on Saturday, September 1, in Poland.
The effective Sarah and Carissa, who have been positioned at the top in Women’s Doubles main draw, had to dig into their arsenal and they remained successful in winning against their un-seeded English rival in a tight fashion and reserved their berth in
the final.
The higher ranked Sarah and Carissa played with precision and took the first set easily but they lost the following game.
However, the final set went into their favour and they emerged as the winner in rubber sets with reasonable score on the board.
On the other hand, the lower ranked Sophie and Helena could not stretch their winning run despite putting up phenomenal show of top class badminton.
However, the English shuttlers remained unlucky in the ending points of final set and lost the match with a respectable margin.
The opening game was interesting when both sides played to their maximum potential and remained close in opening half until the mid-game interval.
After the break, the higher ranked Sarah and Carissa played attacking badminton and took a reasonable lead and maintained it all the way to finish off the set with a 21-15 score on the board.
In the second game, the un-seeded Sophie and Helena played better badminton as they showed impressive improvement in their shots and maintained pressure on their higher ranked rivals.
After the break, Sarah and Carissa tried their best to push their rivals on back foot and eventually lost the second set to their lower ranked challengers with a margin of 18-21.
In the deciding set, Sarah and Carissa lifted up their level of play by putting up spectacular show of attacking badminton and remained in better position until the break.
After the interval, the top seeded Sarah and Carissa remained on track while playing with focus and control and took the final set with a decent margin of 21-18.
Sarah and Carissa emerged as the winners in this rubber-set semi-final battle with a nail-biting 21-15, 18-21 and 21-18 score on the board.
