Saratoga Race Course - Whitney Handicap 2011 - Elliot Walden announces Sidney Candy participation
Elliot Walden, the president and CEO of WinStar Farm, purchased Sidney’s Candy earlier this month and announced that they might race the four year old chestnut colt in the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap at the Saratoga Race Course in New York.
In a statement made by Walden he said, “We’re looking at that as a possibility, it’s undecided at this point, but it’s certainly an option”. The Whitney Handicap is to take place on August 6, 2011.
Sidney’s Candy is the proud winner of having many graded stakes on three different surfaces. He has the most astonishing feature, which is her mastering dirt, turf, and, synthetic. Such a peculiarity is uncommon among horses.
Following her acquisition by the WinStar Farm she completed her work out on June 19, 2011. She breezed the four furlongs in a time of 49.73 seconds. She was then transferred to the barn of Todd Pletcher.
Pletcher, who watched her breeze, commented on the colt’s performance at Belmont Park, by saying, “It was our first work with him, and it seemed to go well, I thought he went well, It was kind of a get-to-know him breeze; he was nice and settled”.
Pletcher also said he might not send the colt for a possible prep race before the Whitney Handicap in case he is sent to the race. Pletcher believes that the colt has a lot of speed and ability to perform miraculously in different races.
A peeping into Sidney’s Candy’s profile reveals that he enjoyed wins in 6 of 13 starts. The most prominent ones include him getting hold of a win in the 2010 Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. At that time Santa Anita had an artificial surface.
Sidney’s Candy has also made his mark in the San Vicente Stakes, the San Felipe Stakes and the La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar. These were all accomplished by him as a three year old. He ended his three year old campaign by scoring a win in the Sir Beaufort
Stakes by 7 1/4 lengths. The race was held on December 26, 2010.
The son of Candy Ride previously received conditioning services from John Sadler in Southern California. His two starts in 2011 have him finishing second in both the races. The first one was the Grade 2 Mervyn LeRoy Stakes held on May 2 on Cushion Track
and the second one was the Grade 2 American Handicap on turf on May 28. They were both contested on Hollywood Park. His earnings compound to $953,560.
Horse racing fans must brace themselves for another thrilling performance from Sidney’s Candy if he makes it to the starting gates of Whitney Handicap.
