Question:

Sardinia - Alghero to Santa Teresa (scooter? train? bus?)?

Hi all,

My partner and I fly to Alghero next week. We are spending our first night there, then intend to head to Santa Teresa di Gallura for a few days.

We are hoping that it is feasible to hire a scooter (125 cc type job) in Alghero, and scoot out way around the coast over the course of a day to Santa Teresa (we will have minimal luggage). Is this feasible? how long would it take? What are the roads around the coast like?

The other (less preferred at the moment) options would appear to be getting a train or a bus - any thoughts on which is a better/quicker/more interesting/cheaper option of these two (if it emerges that 'scooting' is out)? If we travelled by train/bus, we'd probably try to hire a scooter in santa teresa for a few days to explore.

  1. I lived in Santa Teresa for 3 1/2 years (Via Tevere #3).  I wouldn't really suggest getting a motor scooter that small but it might be ok.  The roads are 2 lane and partly windy.  If you like nude beaches, when you get to Rena Majore, go to the beach then over the rocks to the south.  It's a LONG beach and clothing optional.

From Alghero go up toward Porto Torres.  Beautiful stop.

Then from there up to Castlesardo and up to Santa Teresa.

The beach is absolutely GORGEOUS!  You have to go out to the little island (accesible by going across the rocks) and get an all over out there.  There's some great diving to be done on the south side away from the waves among the rocks.

The quickest way WOULD be by bus and then you can do your exploring from Santa Teresa.

My wife loved it there.  We had some good friends on Via Tevere, the Achenza family.  My son ran with their son, ENZO.  Santa Teresa was a wonderfully friendly town.  There is a U.S. Navy ship (USS Frank Cable)/base over off La Maddalena and on Santo Stefano (where the ship is).  You'll most likely run into some Americans in town, so don't be surprised.  The bus stop is at the Catholic church at the end of the road into town.  The Piazza is beautiful at night and so much different than when we were stationed there.  I'd love to be able to get back there for a visit...or LIVE.  You're going at a good time...not a WHOLE LOT of touristi.

  2. hi

    i live in sardinia

alghero fast from santa teresa more than 100 km, the closest airport to santa teresa is Olbia Costa smeralda, and not alghero airport

there isn't railway in santa teresa,

you can rent a car, i think it is better

because scooter is unconfortable, and in this period could rain a lot

by bus you should catch the bus that links alghero airport to sassari (north west sardinia chieftown), and after that take the bus to santa teresa (there aren't direct bus lines from alghero airport to santa teresa)

these are the departure Schedule  of bus lines:

from alghero airport to sassari (main bus station)

    09:25  10:40  13:35  16:55  18:15  21:10  22:00  22:35

    from sassari to santa teresa

    07:20  11:00  13:15  14:10  19:45

  3. well, Alghero is not so near Santa Teresa (more than 130 km) and the roads are slow...so I think that it will take about 3 hours with scooter. I can't help you with trains or buses, I've never used them (usually they're not very good), I think that the best thing is to hire a car or ask directly when you arrive in Alghero, Sardinian people are very kind and for sure they'll give you a solution. Have a nice stay in the bautiful island
