Sardinia - help with where to go please?

Question

I'm looking for an apartment by the beach, where you can go snorkelling, but I don't know which resort/village to go for. Any recommendations, please? The flight is to Alghero, so will need to be north or west, with shops & restaurants open in May, but not snooty or expensive! do you think Palau would fit the bill? We tend to do a lot of exploring by car, so can't be anywhere too cut off. Thanks.

Hello - I have been in Sardinia for the past 2 summers and its glorious.....i was in Alghero the first year and then last year I went to a small place called Lu Bagnu / Castelsardo which is about 1 hours drive from Alghero airport - its not snooty or expensive and is open in May - perfect place to base yourself for exploring Sardinia .....

Palau would be a great location...It's about 2 hours from Alghero though. There is so much to see of the north end of the island. You can also catch a ferry in Palau over to Lamaddalena. It's a small island only about a 15 minute ferry ride from Palau. We lived over there for two years. The beaches are beautiful and great snorkeling! You probably wouldn't want to rent an apartment over there it is quite the tourist spot in the summer and expensive. Alghero is nice, old town has lots of shopping and they do a tour from there on boat to go see some really old caves you can explore. Try and visit Santa Teresa...From there you can take a ferry over to Corsica (french island). Castlesardo is a little cute town too. Alghero is nice too, though maybe it doesn't fit the beach+snorkelling brief. If you get in late though, you could stay a night there. I stayed here http://www.sanfrancescohotel.com/homen.h...  for a week and loved it.
