me and my family are planning on moving to saluo in spain and I would like to start up my own business which involves looking after English children. I want to open a kids activity center where parents can drop off their kids for a 2hr play session and have some time alone. Durring the session I would do different activities such as arts and crafts, games and dance. The ages of the children would be 3 - 11yrs. Can anyone tell me if this is possible? What laws are there surrounding childcare? Any information about this would be really great, thanks.

  1. The care and custody of children is a serious business...anywhere in the world.

I would suggest you contact the Spanish embassy or chamber of commerce. That should put you in a direction.

  2. This is called a 'Ludoteca' here and you need to have permits to look after children. I would suggest getting a translator (if you don't speak Spanish/Catalan) and speaking directly with a lawyer who can advise you on specific laws here in Spain. May I suggest that you also look after local kids as well and advertise that you'll be speaking in English with them. I think that you'll get more business that way as a lot of people send their children to English classes here so if you provided a native English speaking childcare service you'll probably get plenty of offers. Rather than just taking in English children, that way you'll have an income all year long and not just in summer.

Sorry that I can't give you anymore information about the legal side of things, have you got in touch with the British Consulate in Barcelona?

Good luck with the idea anyway, I hope that it all goes well.

  3. Hi, lots of terrible things have happened lately so law's getting stricter (and about time!) with "ludotecas" (what you want to open). I live in the Salou area and I think you could make money, you'll have lots of demand in the summer, and then if you hire English-speaking professionals you'll certainly get local children too.

Just make sure you find out about the laws regulating these "child-minding" activities, be very professional about what you do and think that Spain is in recession and less tourists are spending their holidays in Salou this year (of which, the British aren't a majority either, there're more French, Dutch and German tourists!) .

    Good luck!

  4. as someone said you should take local kids as well. People in England complain about immigrants not integrating and then go and do the same thing abroad. It's infuriating, so please try and learn Spanish and integrate.
