Sassy Image knocked out of the Breeders’ Cup due to injury
After being on a 3 race consecutive win streak this season, the multiple grade 1 winning 4-year-old filly, Sassy Image will miss the Grade 1, $1 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly and mare Sprint due to a chip in a hind ankle which was discovered in
her most recent works on 8 October at Churchill Downs.
The daughter of Broken Vow, out of Ideal Image by Hennessy, Sassy Image moved perfectly in her recent workouts ahead of the Breeders’ Cup race, but on 9 October she was a little off her game which rang the alarm bells instantaneously.
Trained by Dale Romans for owner Jerry Romans, Sassy Image was given some time off when she tore her left front quarter in a sixth place finish in her last start in the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga on 27 August, at about seven furlongs.
Prior to the Grade 1 Ballerina sprint, Sassy Image was coming off a hat-trick of wins, which started at Churchill Downs when the filly participated in the six furlong dash, the Grade 1 Humana Distaff.
The race was run over at a distance of seven furlongs on 7 May, 2011, under Robby Albarado, Sassy Image defeated Hilda’s Passion and Amen Hallelujah, who finished second and third, with the winning time of 1 minute and 21.01 seconds.
At the same venue, Sassy Image was pointed toward the Grade 3 Winning Colors on 30 May, 2011, with C Lanerie aboard, Sassy Image burst past her opponents to win the six furlong dash in style with the winning time of 1 minute and 8.59 seconds.
Next up was the Grade 1 Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder race course, where she was up against the pacey Musical Romance, but she kept the favourite at bay to gallop home under M Smith in the six furlong dash with the winning time of 1 minute and 11.61
seconds,
Although the injury will knock Sassy Image out of the Breeders’ Cup, but she still will be offered at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky sale on 6 November, as a racing/broodmare prospect.
