  1. Yes.  Take a look at the Garmin GPSMap 60Cx.  I use it in my car, on my motorcycle, while hiking, and sometimes on the bicycle.  For detailed use you'll want to add the optional City Navigator maps, as the preloaded maps are rudimentary, and not good for much more than hiking.

This is an excellent unit, and the fourth Garmin GPS product I've owned.  I should add that their customer service is simply the best I have ever experienced -- with any electronic gear, GPS or otherwise.

The only negative is that it is not cheap.  Never leave it on your bike.  In these parts it would be stolen as soon as you turned around.

Others may help you with respect to other brands, but I'm sold on Garmin.

P.S.  I also have a Garmin Edge 305 that I use for bicycling but it is more of a tracking device than a guiding device.  It works quite differently from a traditional GPS device.

  2. Actually, Garmin just came out with the Edge 705 which is both a GPS tracker and a navigator (downloadable maps, SD card, etc) specifically for bikes (heartrate and cadence too). It also has an MSRP of $499!

I loved the Forerunner and 305 I had. They were great training tools (record and playback a ride). But each broke after just a few months (I commute 5k a year) and I returned them both and gave up.

FYI, everyone else I know who has one has had no problem with them. I either got lemons or my ride was too rough.
