I am thinking of getting a Sat Nav (never had one before & am not that technically minded ! ) Are they easy to set up. How are they powered - do they have to be wired into car - do they have to plug into cig lighter socket.

I dont do great mileages but am good at getting lost !

I would only use it in UK.

Suggestions on best one/ not to pricey !

Roads always changing, do they update automatically ?

  1. We just bought one yesterday!

They are really easy to set up they have a suction thingy you put on the windscreen they are REALLY good. The best one is TOM TOM is the absolute best one. ITs also the cheapest one... hence thats why its so popular and everyone goes for it. And its reallly fun and easy to use. IT RRP's around £100

  2. TomTom are good and easy to use. There are 2 types of updates you might need; Minor map updates can be done on the fly and then shared with other TT users, big updates mean new maps, around £30, otherwise you might want Safety camera's, updated weekly, at a cost of around £20 /year. All updates are done by connecting the device to your PC and connecting to the TomTom web servers

  3. Dead easy to install and use.  Powered from the cigarette lighter, and good ones have an internal battery so you can take them from the car and use them on foot.  Tom Tom are good value for money (quite cheap so good for occasional use), but Garmin are better.  Depending on how much you will use it, you have to decide if it is worth the extra money.  Updates are available for information from the web.
