does anyone think that the hype over SAT scores is ridiculous? i think that the SAT board of directors should go easy on us students trying to manage school, sports and extracurriculars all the while studying for SAT's. i mean are they trying to kill us junior year??? i have never studied so much before in my life..... don't they think that they should lower their freaking standards if the national average is a 1500 or something???

and its freaking ridiculous how people like me have good gpas in school and they bomb their SATS!!!!!!!!!!!grrrrr it pisses me off. i think that the makers of the SATs are out to get us and to make sure that we dont get into our dream colleges because of a stupid standardized test!! i mean seriously, how many people actually get a 2000 or over? i know some of u smarties out there do but its not fair!!

my gpa is like a 95

my highest SAT score is a 1790 (combined from the highest scores of my 3 tests)

my highest SAT score from one test is a 1750

  1. REMEMBER THIS---The admissions essay will be your best bet in getting into a good college. Many colleges do not look for only test scores. Remember, the individual transcends the smart test taker. I've heard of many B or C grade students becoming managers of some of the biggest companies in the world while recruiting A grade students to do their work for them. I'm not saying that you should lower your standards. Sure, a good score gives you a far better chance at getting the profession of your dreams than a not-so-good one. I'm just saying be optimistic and never give up. It's okay to mess up once in a while. If you are seriously upset, study harder and take the test one last time (if possible). Otherwise, leave the past behind and make the best use of your time in making your future better. Worrying is not going to change the world into a happier place, anyhow. Also, all of us SAT-takers regret our scores because we all know that we can do better. I'm the same as you because I also worry about my not-good-enough-for-my-standards score. Anyhow, live your life happily and forget about scores :).

  2. It's not possible to have a GPA of 95.

The value of your SAT score depends on the scoring system used.  Most people are familiar with the 1600 system in which a 1750 is pretty much impossible.  In the other system, a 1750 is probably a decent score.  However, your raw score is meaningless without knowing how you rank.

The SAT is a ranking system.  It is meant to show how you compare to others.  Therefore the average has to be middling or it wouldn't have any meaning.  The point is not to give everyone a good score.  If the average were higher, you would have to get an even higher score to get a good ranking.  What matters is your percentile, not your score.

Secondly, it is true that colleges care less and less about SAT scores.  Don't wear yourself out over it.  Focus on making the grades.  Once you're in college and trying to get into grad school, no one will care what scores you got in high school.  The point is to learn and learn how to learn.

  3. One tip: most colleges only care about your Critical Reading and Math scores, so subtract your Writing score when you're comparing your SATs.

Most colleges have a a median score on their website to help you see how you compare to other accepted students.

I think the weight put on the SAT is unfair, too, but remember: colleges are looking for a number of things. Your GPA will definitely be a major plus on your applications. If you've done a lot of sports or activites, that will also help you out.

Try to get interviews with the colleges you're applying to. Your goal should be to prove to the college how you--as a person and as a student--will be an asset to their school. Through interviews, your essay, and your resume of activities, you should be able to prove that you are more than just a few numbers on a piece of paper.

  4. I got a 1570 and I got into a good college.

If it makes you feel any better, there's a lot more that colleges look at besides SAT/ACT scores. I've actually heard that it's becoming an increasingly small factor in college admissions.
