Question:

Sat scores..?

Hey everyone,

I'm a bit confused on how the SAT scores work and I was wondering if you guys would be able to help me.

Neither of my parents took the SAT when they were younger, so they haven't been able to answer some of my questions. I'm thinking about enrolling in a summer SAT prep course but I want to make sure that it will be the right time to take the class. I'm going to be a junior this year. The main thing that is keeping me from taking this class is that I'm not sure if it will benefit me more this summer or next summer going into senior year.

Does anyone know if I receive a higher SAT score in my junior year than in my senior year if I will be able to send the highest score to colleges? or will colleges only accept the most recent score?

  1. First of all, since you are only a junior you will be able to choose which test to send (starting from the March test date). I can't tell you if you would score higher in your junior or senior year, but b/c your class is allowed to choose which score to send then why not try both years and see which one is higher. I took a SAT prep course the summer before my junior year and took the SAT in October and got a 2100--I didn't have to stress out during the school year like my friends.

  2. Im happy to help! Even though you're parents havent taken it, you're making them proud by setting a new standard for your family. I suggest that you take the prep course this summer. It will help you on the PSAT, which technically doesnt require studying but can open up scholarship opportunities (the National Merit scholarship) and start to flood your mailbox with college letters. I suggest that juniors take the SAT for the first tim in either March or May of Junior year. So starting in Jan, bring out your notes and review. Take a full practice test to get used to the 3 hrs and 45 min you'll be testing. In the meantime, after your class, you can also register for the SAT Question of the Day by filling out a free registration at collegeboard.com (the site that you use to register for the SAT). Number2.com also has free questions.

If you wait until senior year to take the SAT, you wont have as much time to retake it. If you are unsatisfied with your first testing, take it again senior year. Colleges will look at your highest combined score so its ok if your score drops the second time. After your last testing, you can send score reports that list them all. A filer at the college you're applying to will input them and the person who reads your application will only be allowed to see your best.

I applaud your planning and if ever you have college questions, Yahoo Answers is here for you. Good luck!
