Satellite internet is it real?

Question

does such a thing exist? what kind of equipment would i need to connect to such a provider? if i buy such a service for my laptop would i be able to connect to the internet from either my house or in the middle of the ocean. by the way im not talking about wifi here. im talking about the real deal "satellite internet", not wifi.

there is using low altitude satelites, like satelital telephony, but is not so good, but good for emergencies.

you need an special modem to connect to that kind of connection

I have satellite internet.  I live in a rural area, there's no broadband..it's dialup or satellite.  I think broadband is better.  I go through Hughes Net...I hate them and I don't recommend them. They have lots of bad reviews all over the place.  

Anyhow, you just get a satellite dish, like people do for t.v., and it goes in your yard, roof, wherever.  A cable attaches from the satellite dish to the modemn.

My satellite goes on and off. Hughes Net has limits with downloads, only 200mb in 24 hours or they cut you off...if I watch 2 podcasts..I'll get cut off. So I can't enjoy videos and all that stuff. They do allow unlimited downloads between 3am and 6am.  They'll tell you they'll put you on "dial up speed" but it's worse than dial up.  

I'm just not happy with the service at all but I have not choice. It's the lesser of two evils...and there's limits to how far it reaches.

I don't know about the middle of the ocean stuff...of course, a guess you wouldn't have to worry about any trees blocking you..ha ha...

Yes, satellite internet is real.  Whether it makes sense for you depends on your needs.  ex: Iridium provides low-speed Internet access with complete world-wide coverage.  It's best suited for text / email useage.
