Sauber-Ferrari hopeful of securing podiums with slight improvements – Formula 1 news
Sauber-Ferrari have expressed that they can secure podiums in the season ahead with slight improvements in their 2012 car, C31.
At present, Sauber are at 6th place in the constructors’ championship with 31 points and they are 13 points ahead of Williams.
Moreover, their driver, Sergio Perez is standing on 9th place in the drivers’ rankings with 22 points. He secured an incredible 8th place finish in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia, after setting off from 22nd grid position.
Later, in the second race at Sepang International Circuit, the Mexican driver delivered an amazing performance in the rainy conditions and secured second podium finish after qualifying for 9th place in the grid. Moreover, he followed the Spaniard, Fernando
Alonso of Ferrari who took the victory in Malaysian GP.
Conversely, in the last two races at Shanghai International Circuit in China and Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, he could not be able to score even a single point as he came 11th and qualified for 8th position in the grid in both them.
Nonetheless, Matt Morris, the chief designer of Sauber has said that their hopes are high and they can manage to secure more podium finishes in the approaching races with just few enhancements in the car.
“I don't think Malaysia was a freak,” Morris said. “The pace of our car, it is competitive - and you have seen that by having four different winners from the first four races. It is so close out there. I think the difference between a Malaysia and a Bahrain
for us looks big, but it is actually quite small. Yet, that can be the difference between being on the podium and not getting any points.”
In addition, he said that they are looking forward to perform well. However, he said that it is very important to keep an eye on what other contenders are doing so as to get sound information for making the further developments.
“You have always got to look forward, but you also have got to look at everybody around you because it is so close,” he said.
The Hinwil-based team has the potential to secure a competitive position in this year’s championship as they have a talented pair of drivers and the necessary expertise.
