Sauber-Ferrari unable to copy Mercedes’ innovative W-duct – Formula 1 news
Sauber-Ferrari has declared that they are unable to afford Mercedes’ novel W-duct design which can be considered as quite an innovation in the season so far.
Sauber’s driver Sergio Perez has shown an astonishing performance at 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix held at Sepang International Circuit in rainy conditions and secured second podium after following Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who is also leading the drivers’
championship with 35 points.
Moreover, it will be quite interesting to know that Perez stood at second even without the use of DRS which boosts-up the top pace of the car during the race.
It has been reported that regardless of criticizing the legitimacy of the new Mercedes design, the big teams will be working curiously to copy the Mercedes’ design.
Conversely, according to Auto Motor und Sport of Germany, to imitate the concept of Mercedes will be quite tough for the lower budget teams.
Besides, Matt Morris, chief designer of Sauber said that to copy the Mercedes design will take plenty of time and a great deal of money whereas he claimed that the big contenders can manage the developments along with the regular work.
“If we started now with a blank sheet of paper, we would be ready in two months,” said Sauber’s chief designer Matt Morris. “But it would really add up. We have to ask ourselves whether it’s worth it for us, or whether we would be better off chasing the
laptime with more conventional steps. On the other hand the big teams can handle a development like that in parallel to their normal programmes.”
Nevertheless, Perez has said that he feels completely confident that he will be successful in taking the victory sooner or later for his team. He added that they have planned to improve their car and for that they need to work extremely hard for the forthcoming
races.
He further said that they must keep in mind that the result in the second GP came in quite strange track conditions.
Nonetheless, he said that he was very much pleased with the performance of the team at Sepang which will surely help in boosting up their morale for the season ahead.
