Sauber aim for promising come back in the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 team Sauber are putting every effort to secure points in the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix and end their point-less run since the German Grand Prix.
Sauber who could not perform well in the last three grands prix are now looking to gain points and climb back to their 6th position in the constructors’ standings. The team currently stands at 7th position with 35 points,
just one point behind Force India.
The team’s technical director James Key is quite optimistic about their performance in Singapore. He believes the previous two circuits, Monza and Spa, were not very easy to drive on with the hard compound tyres. At the upcoming Marina Bay Street Circuit,
however, Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi with a suitable tyre compound option have better opportunities at hand.
Key said, “Pirelli will supply the soft and super soft tyres, the same as in Hungary, and we feel these are generally better tyres for us than what we have had at the last two events.”
He is also looking forward to a good qualifying session at the Marina Bay Circuit. Key believes that even with the Drag Reduction System (DRS) activated, overtaking is not a viable option for the cars at this circuit. Therefore, it is crucial to secure a
good position in the qualifying rounds, he said.
The team tested some new tyre upgrades recently at the Monza racetrack and plans to further improve upon them in Singapore.
Both the team’s drivers, Perez and Kobayashi are extremely motivated and excited at the moment about the strategy that Sauber have adopted for the upcoming grand prix.
Perez said, “Actually I have not raced there yet, but I did a lot of work in the simulator and, knowing our car, I really hope we can have a positive weekend there. We obviously need to score points to get back our sixth position in the world championship.”
For the Japanese driver, who will be driving at his home grand prix a week after the Malaysian GP, this will surely be a confidence-booster and will help him build up his pace.
