Sauber banking on Sergio Perez, C31 for improvement in the coming races – Formula 1 news
Sauber is looking to target improved results in the forthcoming races.
Sauber now feel confident ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, as Sergio Perez came up with an outstanding performance to finish second in the race behind only to Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.
The C31 showed good promise during the pre-season tests and the last race has only confirmed that they are going to be a force to reckon with in the current season. At various stages of the race, Perez looked to be the faster driver, but Alonso’s skill did
not allow him to overtake the Spaniard.
Perez came very close to becoming the winner of the Malaysian Grand Prix but a slightly wider turn with 6 laps left in the race caused Perez to fall nearly five seconds behind Alonso a gap that the Mexican was unable to close and Alonso won the race.
Perez also said that it is possible for him to win races, and he is going to eye the world championship title in the next two years.
Sauber’s chief designer Matt Morris said that the team has made gains in qualifying pace to its previous year but added that there is still room for further improvement and hinted at changes for the race in China.
“I think we have a better balance between qualifying and the race, but we still need to find more performance in qualifying because we are not qualifying where the pace of the car is,” he told AUTOSPORT. “That is something that we accept and are concentrating
on now.”
“There are lots of things you can do in terms of set-up,” he said. “There are also some parts that we will bring to Shanghai to test, as it will be a lot cooler there than it was in Malaysia. Clearly we have a competitive car, and we have to keep the momentum
up now. We need to push on and score some more points – because to have what we have already got after the first two races is a dream start for us.”
It will be interesting to see how Sauber fare as the season progresses to Shanghai. The race is schedule for April 15, 2012.
