Sauber confirms Sergio Perez will not take part in Monaco Grand Prix after crash – Formula 1 news
Sauber have confirmed that their driver Sergio Perez is not in a condition to take part in the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday as he suffered an accident in the Qualifying round on Saturday.
The Mexican is currently in Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco. The doctors have said that he has to stay at the hospital at least overnight. Due to that, he will not be able to participate in the race on Sunday, May 29, 2011.
Perez suffered a crash against the barriers at the chicane of the Monte Carlo circuit when he lost control of his car. Although he escaped serious injuries, yet he will not available on the race day.
The team said that they are somewhat relaxed about Perez’s condition, as he suffered no major injuries.
Sauber admitted that before the accident he was performing better than expectations. However, the closing time proved very unlucky for him as he could not finish his good run for the Monaco GP.
The team’s director James Key said, “First and foremost we are obviously relieved with the reports that Sergio is okay. It's always very worrying for a team when you see an accident of that magnitude, so it's good to hear that he is fundamentally okay.”
He went on to add, “We are looking into what happened. There is no indication at the moment from the data we have seen that there was a problem with the car. But we have to talk to Sergio to investigate further what happened.”
Meanwhile Perez’s teammate Kamui Kobayashi managed a tenth place on the starting grid for the race after the Saturday qualifiers. However, Kobayashi will be the only driver for Sauber who will drive for the team on Sunday.
So far, Sauber only have 11 points from the first five races of the 2011 Formula 1 season so far and they will be hoping for Kobayashi to do well in the Monaco Grand Prix in order to improve their position in the constructors’ championship.
