Sauber driver Sergio Perez: Have the talent to be a world champion, but need to prove it – Formula 1
Sauber Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez thinks that he has all the necessary elements required to be a world champion one day, but he will have to prove it by actually doing it.
The Mexican seemed happy about his performance in the Spanish Grand Prix where he finished 9th on the standings and broke his points duck in just his fifth outing in a Formula 1 car.
Previously a GP2 winner at the Monaco circuit, Perez thinks that some day he can win the Formula 1 world championship.
“Of course I believe I have the talent to be the world champion one day. I think I have everything to get there, as I have confidence in myself. But of course I have to prove it. How does the saying go? Talk is cheap,” commented Perez.
Perez took his first step towards what it will take to be a champion by scoring points in just his fifth race.
The Mexican started the race from 12th place and ended up being beaten by Renault’s Nick Heidfeld in the final few laps to place himself in the ninth place.
When asked about the relief of getting some points in front of his name, Perez stated, “Of course it was great to get rid of the zero next to my name - there’s no doubt about that. And of course I will be out there at every race to raise the number.”
He further added that as a rookie you are always on the other side of appreciation, but getting some points was a big relief.
In the 2011 season opener Australian Grand Prix, Perez finished amongst points but was later disqualified for using an illegal rear wing design.
The Mexican stated that he had scored points in his opinion at the Australian GP and always knew that the car has the pace to land among the top ten positions regularly.
As far as the results of the first five races reveal, Sauber are surely up there to challenge Renault.
Let’s see whether they manage to do that when the sixth round of the 2011 Formula 1 season begins in Monte Carlo on Thursday.
