Sauber driver Sergio Perez believes he has proved his critics wrong – Formula 1 news
Sauber driver Sergio Perez says that his performances during the 2011 season are proof that he is in the sport on the basis of his talent rather than money.
The Mexican driver said that during the initial part of the season at the Monaco Grand Prix, when he had a crash was a hard time for him as he was not physically stable and suffered such a blow for the first time. He learnt that concussions take time to
heal and that is exactly what he did when he decided not to race in Canada and Pedro de La Rosa got the opportunity to race for him for the weekend.
Although he said that he was able to race in Valencia but had not recovered from the effects of his crash until later during the Budapest GP. He believes that he has done well to cope with the circumstances and has only made him stronger for the future.
It also shows his skill and talent and proves that the critics were wrong that he was only a pay driver.
“It was a very heavy impact and I learnt it takes time to physically make sure you feel right after suffering from concussion. Mentally it was a shock too. I got to go home to Mexico and it was important to do all that work to prepare for racing again,”
Perez explained.
Telmex a Mexican telecommunications giant sponsors Perez, but the driver has remained adamant that he is not in the team because of the sponsors he has brought in rather it is his talent as a driver. He scored 14 points during the season participating in
17 races and had a highest placed finish of 7th place at the British GP.
Perez also suffered from the FIA’s decision to ban off-throttle blown diffusers which caused Sauber to stop production of them and though later the ban was lifted, they could not recover from it and did not have a competitive enough car.
The Sauber driver though suggested that it is all part of a learning experience and that is what he is going to take into the next season.
“I think it is important to be patient, to be focused and to always give one 100%. You need to improve constantly in every aspect and you must always be ready to adapt to situations. If circumstances require that you change your driving style, you just have
to go and do it,” Perez said.
