Sauber team hopeful of Spanish GP success, say DRS will help in overtaking – Formula 1 news
Sauber are upbeat ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season which is scheduled to take place this Sunday, May 22.
Sauber’s duo of Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez has said that teams and drivers are well familiar with the circuit in Barcelona after two testing sessions in winter. They added that Sauber will continue to grab odd points on offer.
Kobayashi said, “Our car seemed to be good there in February and March. The track offers an interesting combination of high speed, medium speed and low speed corners. But I believe the Drag Reduction System will help to make it an exciting GP.”
He further added that the movable rear wing is easy to handle and makes overtaking easy. He added that the wing will possibly end the overtaking drought in the Spanish Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez will have his first outing in the Spanish Grand Prix but feels confident of success.
He said, “I strongly believe I will score points there. I’m looking forward to the weekend in Barcelona very much. I have been quite unlucky in the previous races and I really have the feeling the Spanish Grand Prix is when this will change.”
He added that Sauber need to improve the Qualifier pace of the car and then focus on the race as well.
So far, the Sauber team has bagged 8 points and has gone almost unnoticed in the midfield. They were supposed to compete against the likes of Force India and Toro Rosso. Sauber did not only manage to lead the midfield but have also tried their luck against
some of the higher ranked teams like Mercedes and Renault on a few occasions.
Sauber technical director, James Key said that the pre-season testing sessions in Barcelona will help drivers familiarise the track but the Pirelli tyres will behave differently as the temperatures are expected to be hot on the race day. Let’s see how the
team fares on the weekend.
