Sauber team principal Peter Sauber believes the C31 is capable of winning a Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Sauber team Principal Peter Sauber says that “a great deal is possible” for the team in the current year due to the performance of the C31.
Sergio Perez showed at the start of the season during the Malaysian Grand Prix that Sauber will be a strong force in the season as well as he managed to secure a podium finish. Perez finished second only to Fernando Alonso.
Perez then delivered the second podium finish for its team at the recently concluded Canadian GP. He drove extremely well to show that the Malaysian GP was not a freak result and the team has the ability to repeat its performance.
Sauber said that he did not expect such a result at the Canadian GP from Perez due to the position he was starting the race from but knew that the car had the potential to be much better than what the results had shown up until the Montreal race.
“Of course it was a surprise that Sergio managed to advance from 15th on the grid to a third-placed finish in a perfectly normal race, without rain and without any safety car periods,” Sauber said. “But basically we knew the Sauber C31 was far better than
the results of the last few GPs might have suggested. Our performance in Barcelona and Monaco fell well short of our capability. We had the potential in both races to be right up in front, but things just didn't fall into place.”
He added that if the team goes on to harness the potential that it has and gets all the strategies for the races right there is a great potential open for the team in the current season. It is clear that the C31 is a car that is fast on any kind of track.
He said that before the season had started no one would have asked him about a Grand Prix win but now after seven races have been completed in the season with seven different winners anything is possible. The team has already shown in Malaysia when it came
so close to victory and after the Canadian GP podium finish it is very realistic to expect a win in the season.
