Sauber’s Duo Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi upbeat about long Sepang race – Formula 1
Sauber drivers, Mexican Sergio Perez and Japanese Kamui Kobayashi, seemed upbeat about the Malaysian Grand Prix as they commented on the long and tiring race. Although both drivers did say that the race will be physically more demanding than the Australian
Grand Prix, they seemed confident to take on the challenge.
The Australian Grand Prix was not a good one for Sauber team because after finishing seventh and eighth on the table, they were disqualified due to a violation of a Formula 1 rule about the rear wing. Sauber claimed that the extra millimetres in the wing
design was not to help the performance of the wing but was simply misinterpretation of the rules.
Nevertheless, both drivers had some positives to take from the race. Perez, who was making his debut, was the only driver who took only one pit-stop and completed almost 40 laps on a single set of Pirelli super-soft tyres. Perez explained that whatever happened
in Australia is history and he will try out his luck in the Sepang race. Perez has previous experience of driving in Sepang while he was a GP2 driver in 2009. He commented, “It is physically very demanding and also quite technical. Because the circuit is long
it is difficult to get a lap right there.” Perez further added that the consistency of the team in developing the car is good.
Kobayashi was also looking at the Sepang race as a point-scoring chance and he commented that, “After our good performance in Melbourne we are, of course, very motivated for the next race.” Kobayashi explained that Malaysia will be a completely different
story from Australia. He also said that the dry and hot conditions in Sepang will be a challenge for the teams and the drivers. The Japanese also said that if there is some unexpected rain, the whole strategy of the teams and the drivers will be compromised.
The race starts in less than a week and along with Sauber’s duo, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso also commented that the Sepang is physically more demanding than any other circuit.
