Sauber’s Sergio Perez delighted with first point scoring finish at Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1
Sauber driver Sergio Perez has said that he is happy with his first points finish in Formula 1 after he finished ninth at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, May 22, 2011.
The Mexican driver kicked off the season poorly, as he was disqualified in his debut race in Australia due to technical infringements in their car. However, in Barcelona, he got his first points finish after which he admitted the race at the Circuit de Catalunya
was a tough one.
He added that he was pleased at his performance on Sunday and that his first points in F1 are something special for him. Perez praised the good performance of his teammate Kamui Kobayashi, who also finished the race amongst points in tenth place.
He added, “The team had a very good race strategy and did a perfect job at the pit stops. I feel that for me today is a turning point in this season. My first points in Formula 1 are obviously something special for me, and it is good for the team that Kamui
also scored.”
Perez’s teammate Kobayashi was also delighted with his race progress in Barcelona. Despite the fact that he had to pit for new tyres after a puncture in the early laps, he tried his best over the race and finished with one point in the end.
He admitted that some issues had affected his race day, as he lost a lot of time during the opening lap on Sunday and then, another car touched him in the last laps, which left his car with a punctured left rear tyre.
The 24-year-old driver said, “I had to pit and was relegated to last, which of course cost us a very good set of the soft tyres. I had to do quite a long stint on the harder tyres, which was not easy, but overall the race pace was okay.”
After a strong Spanish Grand Prix, Sauber drivers are aiming to continue doing well and score more points in upcoming Monaco GP.
