Saul Alvarez to defend WBC light middleweight title against Josesito Lopez - Boxing News
Saul Alvarez, the current WBC light middleweight champion, will defend his title and undefeated streak against the American proud Josesito Lopez, the incumbent WBC Silver welterweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held on September 15, 2012.
The high-profile pay-per-view is being organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. The above title-defence bout will headline the fight card. In addition, the showdown will witness Jhonny Gonzalez defend his WBC featherweight title
against Daniel Ponce De Leon.
The event will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, and will be televised live on Showtime’s weekly Saturday night boxing show.
Saul and Josesito recently met at a press conference, sharing their thoughts while announcing the showdown. Saul, 21, is rated as one of the best light middleweights in the division, holding the second spot in World Boxing Organisation’s rankings along with
an undefeated streak.
The young Mexican lad has been in a total of 41 bouts, yet remains undefeated. Alvarez, also known as the ‘Canelo’ or ‘Cinnamon’, has collected just one draw decision, otherwise the young lad exhibits a flawless resume with 29 of his 40 wins coming via knockout.
Saul shared his excitement, commenting he wants to gift his countrymen an impressive win on the Mexican Independence day.
Saul stated, “I am happy to be fighting Josesito Lopez on Mexican Independence Day weekend and to give all of our fans a tremendous battle. I was ringside for his fight against Victor Ortiz and saw the talent he possesses. It will be very competitive, but
nothing can take away my desire to be the best in the sport.”
His Saturday night opponent, Lopez, is a talented fighter who recently made a powerful comeback by grabbing a knockout win over Victor Ortiz. Lopez, 27, has been in a total of 35 bouts, boasting 30 wins.
The American lad has pinned several big names. By brutally battering Victor in his last fight, Lopez proved his talent to the world. His
Lopez, on the clash with Saul, stated, “I know they put me in the ring with Victor Ortiz to have me beat and now they are doing the same thing with Canelo. I was a big underdog with Ortiz and now I’m a bigger underdog with Canelo, but I’m up for the challenge.”
The bout will be an explosive one and Lopez should avail this opportunity to gift Saul career’s first defeat. Furthermore, for Alvarez, a win over Lopez will prove that he is not a paper champion and can nail big names in the division as well.
