  1. your choice of bedding for any monitor can be one of the most important decisions you make when keeping them. a good substrate must have these 3 very important qualities .

1st: must be deep enough for the monitor to dig.(1-11/2 foot MINIMUM)

    2nd: must hold moisture well.

3rd: must be able to hold a burrow .

no single substrate will fit all 3 needs so you will need to experiment a bit .what mix you use to achieve these results is up to you. the only thing the monitor will care about is if the substrate meets these 3 criteria. alot of people here will tell you that news paper, or carpet or such is a good choice  because its cheap or easy to clean and these reasons are good for THEM, the keeper , to like newspaper. not the monitor.  monitors dig. thats there thing. thats what they do. if your not provideing them the opportunity to do this you denying them one of the most important aspects of there lives (like eating and basking) and thats why most people fail in keeping them ( or they can only keep them alive (barely) for a few years. people who recomend news paper for there monitors care more about the ease of cleaning up after them than careing for the monitor itself!(either that or there just grossly miss informed about BASIC monitor care)

in my monitor cages ive always used  basically  a 50/50 play sand , top soil mix. or a 50/25/25 top soil, play sand, cypress mulch mix (tweeking the mix here or there depending on species or breeding goals). whole books can be written about the proper substrate mix for monitors. here is a quick link to teach you a little bit more about monitors and the importance of proper soil in there care.http://www.proexotics.com/FAQ2.html#19

  2. newspaper! easier to clean! and cheap!

  3. You can use reptile carpet or a mixture of playground sand and topsoil.  Loose substrate will need to be changed frequently as it will harbor bacteria and parasites.

  4. bark

  5. you are going to want to use a dirt and sand mixture. Bark can work but they love to dig and the sand and dirt combination holds a real good burrow and holds humidity. The bark should cover the humidity but wont hold much of a burrow. The best dirt to use is from outside but it cant have any fertilizers or pesticides. you can go to a landscaping place or hardware store and ask what they got without any pesticides or fretilizers

  6. dont use sand or clay.

i would use bark or aspen beddding or even carpet u can get from petsmart.

carpet is EASY to clean and fast to. cuz u can find the p**p and p**s. where as the bark or aspen p**s would be hard to find.

  7. sand can be deadly, and clay can make them sick

bark is good but dont use cedar or redwood, both r toxic

  8. Mulch is a good option. Make sure it's real chunky. Don't need him choking on it.
