Question:

Saving Potential with a Euro 3600 pm salary in Greece?

I am rewording my question as it seems I had not asked the right question and hence did not get the right answer.

I am currently working in India drawing a salary of Rs 1,500,000 per annum. I have an offer in Greece for Euros 3600 per month (Greece has a concept of 14 salaries, so the per annum would come out to 50,400 euros) .

I wanted to know the cost of living and the saving potential

It would be me, my wife and my 2 and half year daughter who would be staying in Greece on this salary. Daughter would also be going to some British/English school.

I am interested in knowing the saving potential (our life style is average neither on the higher side nor on the lower side)

Thanks..

  1. I answered your question before very briefly but this time l will try my best.

Lets start with the apartment rent:

    1) For a descent apartment 80-100 sqm will pay from 500 EUR to 650 EUR per month. So for a year ( lets take the average of the above 575 EUR- u will pay  6900 + 1150 EUR (2 month rents as a guarantee paid in the beginning ) =  8050 EUR

    2) for a private educational institution you will pay aprox. 3000- 4000 Eur per year

    3) for supermarket costs you will pay approx 100-150 EUR per week ( 400 - 600 EUR per month )

    4) also consider the taxation policy in Greece, l am not sure if you will pay the same as a Greek citizen.

    5) Electricity bills are aprox 80 EUR - 100 EUR every two months

    6) An average car costs 10 000 - 15 000 EUR ( if you need to buy a car) You can otherwise rent a car through leasing.

I wrote the most important living expenses in Greece. It depends of course a lot on your lifestyle. I did not write about clothing because you can buy nice cloths in good prices or nice cloths by designers.

Saving in Greece is hard for the locals because most of us earn 800 - 1000 EUR average salary.

  2. well i am going to tell you about the cost in average.

not too luxury ,neither too simple

A house for 3 people(2 bedrooms),already with furnitutre may cost about 500-600 in a decent area.

usually the electricity bill is from (60-one person) to 140 ,every 2 months(normal use)

water bill is very low so dont even count it ,

phone bill depends on you, believe me,but lets consider and amount of ..70 euros???

then there are the everyday shoping which really depends, can be from 300 (per month) too 500 maybe....

if you have a car, then count the gas, which the price is ....yeah...we all know about the price.......

but public transortation is very good in greece, why to use a car?

Not considering the private (because english schools are private) school you have (for my calculations) about 1000-1500 to save......

Please do not count on much to the christmass salary, dissapears in time zero,at least for me(presents,food...etc...)

  3. It depends on the lifrstyle you want. How much is the school going to cost? Do you want top of the line clothes?  Do you go out  often?

Last year, it was calculated by INCA that a family needs about 1800 euro a month to live on.

Basic wage is 600 euro a month.

So, you can live well on 3600 a month, just don't think you can live like a lord. i.e. Going to the hairdresser once a week, Armani clothes and lobster and champagne for dinner.

You may be able to save about 1000 euro a month, and still live like a human being.

  4. What the ladies have said in their answers is correct more or less to the least bit.

One thing that is not taken into consideration though, is that if you will be getting  that amount per month, that means either a very specialized worker or a top of the ladder member of a company. In either case and especially in the second, you will have to do some entertaining which will be a extra minus of your salary. That can be anything from 100 -150+ € at least per one outing weekly.

Also electricity, telephone and heating is a rather large sum per month. With moderate use I would say roughly some 200+€ per month.
