Me and my mom want to go to the UK for a holiday (we live in AustrAlia) but dont know if we can save up enough to do it. My mom doesnt get paid that much and im only 15 so i can only get a part time job which still doesnt pay much. We worked it out last night that we will need $10.000 each for tickets and accomdation. How on earth are we going to save up this much money? any ideas?

  1. Has your mom considered starting starting her own home-based business as a travel agent?  She could do it part-time in the evenings and the training would help her learn how to find the best fares. She would also earn a commission from your booking your trip!

  2. Where there is a will there is a way! If you really want to do it you will find ways. But being disciplined with spending is a must.

Have a bank account that you can put money into but not access to withdraw. Preferably one that earns good interest as it grows.

Working an extra job will probaby be necessary - that could be from home or going out to work in the evening.

You can also spend time researching exactly where you want to go and so on and then nearer the time book when a really good airfare and accommodation deal comes up. There are a lotof places on the internet where you can get much cheaper accommodation and flights than you might think.

Go around the house and find anything from clothes to other things you really don't need or want and start selling on Ebay.

You can stay in hostels - yes even your Mum can stay in Youth Hostels and cheaper accommodation.

There are special passes you can get before you leave for visiting historic places that make it muchcheaper. Also checkout if there are similar for train travel - there are to some countries like Japan. You travel much cheaper than the Japanese can with these passes.

So really research the fares and accommodation costs. It takes quite a bit of time. You may find it cheaper to get a cheap internal fare to Perth and then a cheaper fare from there to London?Check all possibilities like this.

Good Luck - I am sure you will do it if you have set your heart on it and are willing to do the work involved.

It can be done! I have done it - , several times over.My children have done it! They didn't have to save that amount but in one year saved over $3,000 dollars while at school doing many other activities as well,to go on student exchanges.

  3. Me and my daughter are leaving for Europe within 7 weeks.  We planned on this for 3 years and bought our plane tickets already in October/November 2007.

I would suggest that you work out what you can save on a monthly basis, and work out the time you need.  Plan your trip for that time.

Then the earlier you buy your plane tickets, the cheaper you can get them.  Our tickets were about R1500 (South African money) more expensive within 2 weeks - my boss asked me to wait for 2 weeks in line with a potential project.  Visit any travel agent.  They will be able to get you the best prices for airplane tickets as they have access to most of the airlines booking sites.

I agree with the previous post, see what you can sell and how you can make money outside of a normal monthly salary.

Remember to take inflation into account and be disciplined in you saving effort.

Don't book the first possible accommodation you get, do a little 'shopping' on the Internet.  We got good accommodation for good prices.  This also applies to transport - shop.
