  1. always from the bottom with a power saw, from the top with a push cut hand saw

  2. The problem with cutting from the top with a normal circular saw is the teeth of the blade will come from the bottom to the top grabbing at the formica and posibbly splitering it or tearing it from its glue. cut from the bottom side useing tape as mentioned above but on the formica side. I have cut from the top before but you must move the saw in a backwards motion to prevent teeth from gabbing formica go slow and if possible practice going backwards first. Iam experienced in doing this so feel confident before attempting it can be awkward.

  3. from the bottom if using a circular power saw as the saw cuts up and plus you do not want to drag the saw over the top finish. As an added protection you can add a strip of masking tape and cut through that.

  4. top, BUT,  put down masking tape on the cut to protect it from chipping.

You may also want a down cut blade, if you are using a reciprocal.

  5. Top side (formica) for a clean cut or you will splinter the laminate.
