I have recently bought a new selmer s90 mouthpiece for my tenor sax, and i was wondering if there are things i should do before i start to play more on it.

Also, what are some things that i could do to keep my mouthpiece playing as it should be down the road?

  1. I think one of the main things is to dry it when you've finished playing it. That's the only thing I do with my mouthpiece, really.

  2. Hey there.

    1.  Always keep it in your case with the ligature and cap in place... and then in a soft pouch.

    2.  Buy one of those tiny stuff-its to swab and dry it before you put it away.

    3.  Never leave it un-capped when it is on your horn and you are not playing it.  This protects mouthpiece and reed.

    4.  Wash it in warm / not hot soapy,  gentle detergent.  Rinse and dry.

    5.  Never allow anyone else to blow on your horn,  borrow your mouthpiece.

Simply be very careful with it....  it really is pretty fragile.  It will last a long time if you treat it with special care.

  3. You dont need to do anything to start to play on the mouthpiece except find some reeds that you like playing on....But do not wash the mouthpiece in hot water becaus eit eill take of the coating, ruin the mouthpice and it will taste horrible....Selmer S90's are used for a concert setting because the have a softer, smoother sound.
