Saxophones: Alto and Tenor Range Difference?

Question

I've worded this in a really dopey way, but bear with me:

Do alto and tenor saxes work around the same range? What I mean is, aside from one being a few notes (a fifth I think?) lower than the other, are their ranges virtually identical?

Also, how else does the sound itself differ?

written ranges are nearly identical, sounding ranges differ (off by a 5th-tenor lower is close)

tone quality is where they differ! alto is brighter whereas tenor is smoother & sexier
