Question:

Scab on back of cats neck?

I have two cats and last night found a scab on the back of my cats neck, smaller than a dime. It looks fine, no pussing, just a clean looking scab. I assume the cats were play fighting and she got scratched or we have a new covered litter box and they may have been skuffling over who gets to use it and she may have bonked the back of her head??

I'm not super worried about it because it looks clean and she hasnt been scratching at it or anything and is acting completely normal.

She doesn't have fleas either. Could it be something more complex than what I assume??

  1. watch it and make sure it doesn't get a strange look to it (deer tick bite?).  Bonking the head usually doesn't cause a sore like that -- so I'm assuming it was the two cats fighting.  If it starts to get red, or develops clear or yellow puss, then make an appointment as soon as possible with your vet

  2. If your cats are strictly indoor, it is most likely from your cats playing and maybe getting a little too rough. If they go outdoor, it may have been another cat- All the indoor/outdoor cats on my street gets scabs fairly often. It should just heal on it's own, but it's good to keep an eye on it. Double check and make sure your cat does not have fleas, it could also be some type of allergy. If it heals up, most likely not much to worry about, if it doesn't heal or she keeps getting scabs you should probably have your vet examine her.

  3. it would be your cats playing it happens to my cats to

  4. i wouldn't worry about it. my cat gets those from time to time. its most likely just a little play-battle wound. but if your concerned check it for the next week and if it starts changing or getting bigger then i'd take your cat to the vet.

  5. your assumption may just be it. The most important thing here is the fact that kitty has a clean scab..no pus, inflammation, blood draining from it etc. Even better is the fact that she doesn't seem bothered by it so I would not worry about it. It will eventually  disappear completely. It is healing now.

  6. I would venture to guess that there was either a fight between the two or some over scratching from a bug bite.  Doesn't sound like anything to be too alarmed over, just make sure it stays clean and dry with no sign of redness around the wound which would indicate an infection.  Should anything changes such as the cat not eating or drinking, scratching and or redness around the puncture wound.

  7. Do you clean the food and water bowls daily?..

I ask because I had a roomate who's cat kept getting weird scabs like that..   she was only washing the bowls once a week..  when the vet told her to start washing them every day the scabs went away and never came back.

  8. If your cat is a female and is not neutered then the scab is most likely from her mating with a male cat. Don't worry its normal. it happens when the male mounts her.
