Former Liverpool defender John Scales advised the club’s owner to look for a more experienced candidate for the vacant managerial post at Anfield, and feared that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Martinez’s appointment will result in the Reds failing to attract big names
in the summer transfer window.
Following Kenny Dalglish’s exit from Liverpool, the 38-year old Wigan Athletic manager is believed to be in pole position to take over the reins of the Merseyside club, following the Latics phenomenal late run in the Premier League.
However Scales, who capped 65 appearances for the Reds, warned http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 against rushing into the decision of appointing the Spaniard as the head-coach. He pointed out that the club had axed Dalglish in view of the Reds failure to mount a challenge for a
top-four position, and Martinez’s lack of experience with the top-flight teams does not merit a management candidature at Anfield.
He also opined that Liverpool needs to spend handsomely in the summer in order to land some big names at Anfield, and for that they required a more influential and seasoned manager.
While talking to reporters, he said: “If it was a http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 they are not going to be able to attract the really big names but they would have to take the club forward at a slightly slower rate and progress in a more gradual manner.”
Even though Liverpool compiled their world league tally since 1954 in the last season, Scales refused to admit that the club was in a state of turmoil. He indicated that some of the new players were taking time to accustom themselves to the atmosphere at
Anfield, and that the criticism meted out at them will serve as a reminder to them not to take their places for granted.
He continued, “I know that from my days playing for Liverpool because it was a case of knowing that I had to perform or otherwise I would be out of the team. That is the nature of professional football at that level.”
He went on to say that the club’s new manager will face an uphill task of reinvigorating the Reds fight for a top four finish in the next term, and advised the owners to entrust the responsibility on someone with experience.
