Is there an advantage on going to a periodontist to have a deep cleaning for gum disease than going to a regular dentist? I've noticed that a periodontist is more than double the cost.

  1. my sister just had that done!!  she went to a normal dentist and was fine.  if i were you i'd just go to a normal one cause its cheaper and they do the same thing.

  2. The dentist I work for does the four quadrant deep cleaning, and I've had it done by a periodontist and I don't think there is much of a difference. Sometimes people get it done at a perio dentist because they are already having another treatment there as well. This normally caters to patients with the severe signs of gum disease, and need things like gum dressings and such. You can definately have your general dentist do it, if he does such a thing cause some dentists like to keep it simple and just do cleanings, fillings and extractions. But there is definaetly nothing wrong with asking your general dentists opposed to getting referred to a periodontist.

Also, they charge more cause thats there specialty!!!!
