Question:

Scared of failing first year college..

I signed up for Computer Science. I don't know why but it was my love of computers that prompted me to take it. I don't want to do anything else..be a doctor etc. I don't know anything about programming, but I thought I could learn anything about the world of computers.

Now I am about to realize how much math is involved. I am very decent in math but that's about it. I am going to attend college this Sept.

My question is: Does anyone know people or your own experiences that you did horrible the first year with a major improvement in the second time around? I am very nervous about failing the first year, cause my family is counting on me to succeed

I just don't want to be thought of as a loser, that's all, and a fool in class in front of the professors. I do not which to be asked why I bothered taking up this course in the first place if I am indeed horrible at it., with further embarrassment.

  1. College really isn't as scary as some people think it is.  There may be some things that you don't understand at first and might need to catch up, but there are always people willing to tutor you, and your professor should be more than willing to help you out.

  2. If you want to be suscessful, you probably will.  You will have to work hard, but there are usually tutoring and other programs to help with problems.  Unless you are at a large school where everyting is taught by graduate students, the prof. will help also if he thinks you are trying.  Good luck.

  3. Be confident!!! You'll probably be assigned an adviser your freshmen year, who can help you with your fears. Just go into each class with your head held high, and don't be afraid to sit in the front and ask questions. If you think you're going to look stupid, or loser-ish, just think how stupid and loser-ish it is to fail out of college and move back home...

You can always change your major, too, so keep that in mind. Give your computer major a chance, and if you really hate it, talk to your adviser about switching.

Your freshmen year is the MOST important year for your GPA.. NEVER depend on the other years to bring it up (you'll learn it is infinitely harder to bring your GPA up than bring it down!). Go in full force and work as hard as you can... the rest of your life depends on it!

    Good luck! :)

  4. My very first quarter of college, I didn't do as well as I hoped. I signed up for hard classes and I didn't know the process of dropping and getting a new class and all that.

What I ended up doing was sign up for one or two more classes then i really need and attend the first day of each class and pick the 3 (i only took 3 classes a quarter) that i really liked and thought I could pass.

Also before going to class I went on www.ratemyprofessor.com to see what other people have said about a particular professor.

Now I've graduated. I'm sure you'll do fine! Good Luck in college!

  5. Generally first day of class is dedicated to the syllabus and is when most people decide whether or not they would like to stay in the class. If you feel that it is too difficult for you, there is no shame in dropping and discussing another class with your advisor.

    Good luck!

  6. Try to stay smart and physically strong.

Second: Make the right priorities in using your time.

  7. Don't be scared at ALL!!! U will have such a great year! And do ur best, I know college is tough, but u will live through it, EVERYONE does! =)

    Good Luck at College!!! =)

There r some links below that will halp u get through ur year. =)

    Hoped I helped! Thankz!

  8. From my experience, it only gets harder as you go on. Concepts build upon each other so if you get behind, it really snow balls. I was a Computer Information Systems major as opposed to Computer Science for the exact reason being me + math = suck!  Programming isn't the only field in Computers - there is also networking and business analysis (at my college they called this business information systems). I was undecided for my first year of college, I eventually found my way to CIS: Software Development and have since graduated and have a good paying entry level job. Don't worry - see how your first year goes and if it's too hard, consider your other options (if your college only offers comp sci, consider transferring to one with other computer options)

  9. Listen, if you are not able to have a high performance in math, it means if you are not really good at math, I think you should call off this course, why to waste your energies in something that you do not abilities to face? You will probably finish computer science, but... how will it cost ?
