my parakeets hatched two eggs about 3-4 weeks ago. yesterday the mom pushed the babies out of the nest so we thought maybe it was their time. they are just now growing a little fuzz on them, the only problem is one is real healthy looking and the other is quite smaller. it still seems to be growing fine just obviously the runt. well when the mom kicks them out of the nest her and the dad start pecking the runt like theyre trying to kill it? but they arent doing that to the other. and everytime we put it back in the nest later she shoves it out again and starts pecking it hard. what do we need to do? is she trying to kill it because its a runt?

we arent breeders, just had 2 parakeets, honestly didnt even know one was male and one was female. we really want to help both babies survive though! please help!

  1. They could be cleaning it?

Is there a way to isolate the babies and raise them without the parents around?

  2. try researching the mating habits of those birds. if theres something odd about it someone probably has already noticed it.

  3. move the babies out- oh, and you should mention that they are birds in your main questuion.

  4. Just hand feed the babies and don't let the parents near them, keep them in a different cage. Make sure you keep them warm and full! Here is info on hand feeding birds...

  5. yes they are probably trying to peck the runt to death.

but also bear in mind, your two parent parakeets are probably first time parents and can be very clueless as to how to parent. yes, even animals need to LEARN parenting skills, they are not all that instinctual.

separate the runt from the others. call a vet. and good luck!

  6. put it in another cage and handfeed it . If you dont know how to do this go to an avian vet and I am sure they will be glad to show you  how instead of letting this baby die . good luck .

  7. well birds have kids chicks and usually only one survives so they might just kill it or try to make it fly... good luck

  8. you should talk care of the that they don't want and give it more attention

  9. awwwwww lol put the baby in another cage fast !!!

  10. Parent birds have a 6th sence sort of thing. There is possibly something internally wrong with the baby. Your going to have to remove the baby and put it into some thing warm like a aquarium. Go to the petstore and buy some hand feeding formula. But there are other reasons why birds do this, could be the parents were plcuked when they were younger. Or could be because they are too young to breed and are unsure on how to raise the familiy they have created.

  11. Yes, they're probably going to end up killing one or both babies. Sometimes they get stressed and throw the chicks out of the nest and kill them. Maybe you could have them in a quieter area of the house where they won't get bothered so much. That's what I had to do with my finches; just keep it quiet and not look in on them very often. And make sure they have lots of foods available for the chicks (mashed up hard boiled egg, etc.). If this is their first time with chicks, they'll have to learn how to be good parents. Keep putting the chicks back in the nest if you can . Good luck.

  12. put it in a different cage and feed it yourself.

  13. Try putting the the baby in another cage, and feed it milk out of an eye dropper.

Or give the babies up for adoption..

  14. The same thing happened with me, and I freaked out! I got two cages and put the larger chick in with the dad, and the smaller chick in with the mom. The mom will think that the small chick is the only one, so she will treat it well. After a few days you can put them back together. Make sure your mommy and daddy cages are not right next to each other, they should be in different rooms. It sounds weird, but it works! Good luck!

  15. Sometimes when animals have twins they abandon one and keep the other.  She might be trying to do that.

    Good luck.
