Question:

Scared to do a back handspring?

I can do a round off back handspring on the floor and I can pretty much do a standing on the floor at cheer. The problem I have is that the minute someone tells me to go for it with no spot I get deathly scared and won't go. This is really holding me back and really annoying. And I know I just have to do it, but is there like anyway that I can not be scared anymore? *NOTE* It's not the fear of going back that I have, it's fear of getting hurt and doing it with no spot.

  1. you dont need any drills you just need will power and confidence its not going to hurt you trust me i had the same promblem once you do it you will get over your fear

  2. Try having someone stand or kneel there, as if they were going to spot you, but not put their hand on your back. That should help, if not, then you should probably just practice.

I'm not afraid, i just can't do it yet. lmao, ugh it sucks.

  3. My advice is to just stay away from it for now. Your body is telling you that you're somehow not ready to handle the pressure, and that's totally OK. Fear is your body's natural way of protecting you from getting hurt.

A couple tips to not get hurt::

Remember that your whole point is BACK, NOT UP. Thinking up may lead you to jump a little too high, which could injure your wrist, elbows, etc. Never do this.

One very important sentence: NEVER LOCK YOUR ELBOWS IN A BACK HANDSPRING. If you land like this, you could get seriously hurt in your elbows. Always have them bent!

Try practicing a couple more times with a spot. This might boost your confidence a little more.

  4. first visualize yourself doing it perfectly! then if your still scared dont say negative things like im not going to crash but say positive things like im going to do it perfectly. but also have a coach stand there or kneel behind you when you do it and dont have them spot you unless you really need them! you can do it!

  5. I understand! I was a tumble coach for an all-star squad for a long time.

Lots of girls have this problem. The best advice I can give you is after you sit in the 'chair' position try to jump UP not just BACK. That way, your head will be very far away from the floor and the handspring will be alot easier on your joins.

Have you tried it on the wedge by yourself? Sometimes that makes for an easier transition.

Good luck! Next step is tucks which are way less scary believe it or not!
