Today I went surfing with my friend, and I got caught in a rip current. It was really scary experience but obv I got out of it lol. I love surfing and swimming in the ocean but now I'm terrified to go back in .. All I want to do is enjoy it again and stop thinking about it. Any advice to get back into the ocean without freaking out?

  1. You shouldn't be frightened; you took the correct steps to get out of the rip You now have a greater respect for the ocean's power. Remaining calm and paddling parallel or diagonally to the beach will get you back in.

  2. hey im sorry to hear about you incident.

i think you should maybe think about doing your bronze meddallion. this will really help you with what to do if your stuck. for example, when your stuck in a rip you will no to swim horizontal.  and you will also learn new things that could help you in future.

  3. First off you need to read the ocean before you go into it. Next time take note of where waves are breaking and the movement of the water.

Most of the time you can predict what will happen before you jump in. I am an extremely experienced surfer and when i went out in the ocean I failed to watch the waves and water. I too got sucked out. Lucky for me a hug swell didn’t come in or i would not be here today. The rip took me to a major reef area where I would have been cut up severely.  Plus no life guards on duty.

Next time beaware of what you’re doing and always swim near life guards or with friends.

    Good luck

  4. Just take it easy we all do something scary....Just ease yourself back into the water and if a rip takes you just stay afloat and go with it don't fight it eventually it runs out of strength and you make your back to shore sounds simple but it can be scary....Maybe have some good friends with you to help you out

  5. Well Im sorry to hear what happened and I am glad you are okay. if you're really scared go to counseling to talk it out...it helps.

  6. Do you think you could go in a bit at a time until you felt comfortable?  Just letting the surf hit your feet as you walk the coast seems like something that would not make you freak out.  Just go deeper and deeper in until you gently conquer it.  Once you lose footing the first time, take a quick swim and come right back, etc.

  7. If your caught in a rip current, you want to swim parallel to the shore until you can't feel it pulling on you anymore, then swim in to the shore

  8. Go in with a group of people. Don't think, just do it!

  9. Just Don't Think about It  If you Keep A Fear of the Ocean then you will never go back in it again and you will Miss out on the Fun that you use to have at the beach
