Question:

Scared to travel by myself. Any advice?

I'm not a shy person, but when it comes to travelling or walking around in public by myself I get real very nervous. I have some family that I tend to visit almost once a month that live about an hour and a half away, and with the cost of gas I'd rather not drive, but take the Metro. I'm so nerous to travel by myself though. Its strange cuz when I was younger (8-14) I used to travel by plane across the state all the time by myself and loved it but the past few years I've developed a bad anxiety towards being alone in public. Also, I just feel a 45min airplane ride is much safer than a 90min bus ride. And every other story on the news of crazy or angry people killing each other or someone getting molested or raped doesn't make me any safer about travelling by myself in a big metal car with strangers. Also, since I have to take two routes to get there, I'm scared I'll get lost and panic.

Please, can you give me any advice to be more relaxed and feel safe?

  1. The metro is really ok. You know the news LOOKS really hard for those stories and they usually happen at night when no one is around. Personally I ride the metro all the time in downtown Atlanta (it's called MARTA here). Even at night I've never been witness to anything that shady. Just take the metro during the day when there are lot's of people riding with you. No one is going to s***w with you in a crowded bus or subway car in broad day light.

Being paranoid will draw more attention to you than anything else. Take public transportation with a stiff upper lip. Pretend you do it all the time and you're a "tough guy (or gal)" with a chip on your shoulder. People will leave you alone. You'll be ok.

If I were you I would stop watching and reading the news... It's far too depressing.

  2. OF COURSE YOU'LL BE SCARED.. HERE'S AN ADVICE WHEN YOU  SEE A PERSON FOLLOWING YOU DON'T LOOK AT HIM/HER BECAUSE THAT GUY MAYBE BAD ..

(THAT HAPPENED TO ME ONCE.. THERE WAS A MAN FOLLOWING ME.. I LOOKED AT HIM BUT HIS GONE.. BUT I SUDDENLY FELT.. MY WALLET WAS GONE TOO! )
