Scarlets release Australian International number eight David Lyons – Rugby update
Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli based Welsh Rugby Union side, Scarlets, has released their number eight, David Lyons, prior to the maturation of his four-year contract. Officials have confirmed the released of Lyons on their website on
Wednesday, June 15.
Lyons was under a four-year contract with the Scarlets, however, he requested the club’s management for an early release to move to France. Reports are that the former Wallaby international is likely to sign a new long-term deal
with the French Top 14 outfit, Stade Francais.
Commenting on the reports about him joining a Top 14 side, Lyons said, “I always planned to play in France and I've been working closely with the region for some months now on my release. I'm looking forward to the opportunities
ahead of me now and the chance to pursue my ambitions with a French club.”
Lyons made his international debut in 2000 against Argentina. He made has 44 international appearances for the Wallabies and scored 20 points.
New South Wales born Lyons started his professional rugby career with the Super Rugby franchise New South Wales Waratahs in 2002. He played for the Waratahs until the end of the 2008 Super Rugby season. He played 93 games for Waratahs
and scored 35 points. Lyons made a record 83 straight appearances for the Waratahs and his record run was ended after he sustained a knee injury.
The 30-year-old Lyons joined the Scarlets at the start of the 2008/09 season in the Northern Hemisphere. He made his debut for the Scarlets against the Bath Rugby in August 2008. He has played 77 games for the Scarlets and scored
30 points for them.
Scarlets head coach, Nigel Davies, has praised Lyons contribution to the teams efforts and expressed his best wishes for his future. Davies commented, “David has played an important role within our group over the past three years.
He has always been a consummate rugby professional, his experience and approach with younger players has been valuable to us at key times.”
Australian international David Lyons has termed his stay at the Scarlets as the most enjoyable time in his rugby career. Stade Francais will announce the details of their contract with the David Lyons during next few weeks.
