For my college class, we need to present stories that happened in classes and how the teacher reacted to them. The teacher is looking for stories that included special education students whether they are deaf, blind, mentally or physically handicapped, etc. Also, we are supposed to tell how the teacher reacted, and what should have been done (if something different should have been).

  1. When I was teaching K-6 special education, I worked with a 1st grader who had mild autism. He often repeated things he would hear on TV and often times they were humorous. I tried very hard not laugh many times as it was often attention seeking behavior. However, one day, I just couldn't help it. His class was having a Valentine's Day party. His mother had promised to come but she hadn't yet arrived. Another feature of his autism was a dislike of loud noises or chaotic scenes, which you can imagine both were occurring in a 1st grade Valentine party. He hid under the table to avoid the situation and would not come out. He was crying and holding his hands over his ears. His teacher left the room to come get me to help remove him from the situation (I was only a room away), and another mother attempted to take over the situation and try to coax him from under the table. The teacher and I entered the room just in time to hear a very loud , "Shut the **** up, Rachel's mom!" The mother had a look of horror on her face as did the rest of the classroom, but his teacher and I had to turn around and leave so we could bust out laughing! We probably should have reprimanded the behavior according to behavior plan, removed him from the situation, processed with him and have him give restitution, but it was funny and we let it go with a simple apology.

  2. The teacher was teaching a social studies class and got into an argument with a student who was diagnosed as bi-polar.  The teacher reacted to the students inappropriate comments by arguing in front of the peers.  The student was not going to be put down by his peers so he argued back.  What was worse was that he really had no recall of what was said during the argument or what he had said that was inappropriate.  It was solved by an automatic call to the administrator saying he had told the student to leave the class.

Number one, you don't get into an argument with a student. You should step outside the door so that you can monitor the class and talk with the student.  If the student is bi-polar and this is an off day, which this was, you may find that he could be sent to another teacher to the remainder of the period.  The next day would be a better time to discuss the inappropriateness of his comments and to question him about whether he recalled his comments.  You need to involve the counselor, too.  Check with the parent after school or during a private time to see if anything happend at home to trigger the student before coming to school or perhaps he has had a change in medication and the parent needs to know about the situation.  It is also critical that as teachers that you never just send a student from your class.  The law requires that you be responsible for the supervision of all students at all times.  You are setting yourself up for major problems.

  3. You'll find plenty of true stories at a free website created by teachers, for teachers.  Some of the stories are very moving... this is a great resource for what you need to do in your class.  You can even e-mail the site for additional information if needed.  All free.   Try googling Alternative Education Bible and it should pop-up for you.

  4. mm.. one of my cousins had to do that for college... and I told her to put something like "embarrasing college-class moments"  & stuff like that in youtube and she found lots of videos... u could just take those videos and get the stories from it.

    good luCK.
