Schalke 04 goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer has revealed that he will not be extending his contract with the club and will seek a move away from the German outfit after the 2010/11 season.
Neuer’s current deal with the Royal Blues runs until the summer of 2012 and he is linked with a move to host of clubs. However, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are believed to be the possible destinations for the goalkeeper.
The Red Devils’ number one goalkeeper, Edwin Van Der Sar has decided to retire from football come the end of the season and United are definitely in the market to find a replacement for the Dutchman. On the other hand, Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge
is a huge admirer of Neuer and will tempt him to join the German Champions.
The 25-year-old has had a number of contract negotiations break down since the past couple of years and today he conducted a press conference to announce his decision to leave the The Miners.
Talking to the reporters, Neuer said, "I've told the Schalke directors that I won't sign a contract extension. I've come to this decision without other people trying to influence me. All the other speculation doesn't have any basis."
"This decision has nothing to do with the arrival of a new coach here or with another club. I'm very grateful to Schalke and the fans, but I want to keep my options open after 20 years at the club. I now want to focus on achieving our goals this term," added
the shot-stopper.
Neuer developed from the youth ranks of Schalke and quickly established himself not only in the club’s playing eleven but also became a first choice goalkeeper for the German National team. He also represented his team in the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South
Africa.
Neuer has been a pivotal figure behind Schalke’s success over the years and played a huge role in guiding the club to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. His team will take on Manchester United in the first of the two-legged semi-finals on Tuesday,
26 February, 2011.
