Schalke played host to Valencia in both the team’s second-leg clash in the Champions League at the Veltins Arena.
Having drawn their first-leg encounter at one goal apiece, the advantage going into the game was with the German side. This was due to the fact that Schalke had the advantage of the away goal working in their favour and were determined to try their best to keep that advantage intact on the night.
After much anticipation the match kicked off with the referee blowing his whistle to signal the start of things in the game.
In the 8th minute, Valencia created the first chance of the game as Mathieu received the ball after a corner was taken by the visiting side, however, his final effort on goal went begging as he dragged his shot just wide of the mark.
In the 14th minute, the home-side created their first chance of the game. Jefferson Farfan managed to deliver a pin-point cross to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vincente-c36196 Guaita.
In the 17th minute the first goal of the game was scored via http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ricardo-Costa-c30980. Mehmet Topal sent in a venomous and pacey cross, which managed to connect with Costa’s head and landed in the back of the net. This goal was also the first ever goal that Costa had scored for the Spanish side.
In the 28th minute http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Peer-Kluge-c29645 went on to take down Pablo Hernandez with a rather late lunge. As a result the referee had no choice but to go to his pocket and show the Schalke player a yellow.
In the 40th minute Schalke won a free-kick near the Valencia area. Farfan stepped up to take the set-piece and the forward went on to bend in a brilliant shot, which had the keeper beaten all ends up as it landed into the back of the net to level the scoring in the game, and in the tie, once again.
Soon after the second goal in the game, the first-half came to an end. At the half time break, the sides were level at one goal apiece and two goals apiece on aggregate, with both sides having scored the same amount of away goals.
