Schalke boss says club must improve
Schalke head coach Felix Magath said his players must improve their Bundesliga results in order to help the club move away from the foot of the table.
After a successful 2009-10 season which saw Schalke come close to lifting the league title, they have endured a dismal campaign domestically.
Magath has led his men to just one win in the Bundesliga this season from ten matches. Schalke has also picked up three draws to leave them with six points.
They are in second last place, remaining ahead of Borussia Mönchengladbach only by virtue of a superior goal difference after losing 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, 30 October.
Magath says that woeful form must not continue and called on his men to carry over their good results in the UEFA Champions League and DFB Cup.
He told his club’s official website, "The (Leverkusen) defeat is a bitter pill to swallow. Football-wise we were very good at times, but overall we didn't exert enough pressure.
"The effort our position in the table requires wasn't always there. After going behind, we didn't let our heads drop, however, and tried lots of things, but we were unable to find the right tool to unhinge the Leverkusen defence.
"We now have to ensure we get away from the bottom as quickly as possible. Wins are the only thing that can help us do that. Even a draw wouldn't have been enough today. In the Champions League and in the DFB Pokal it's going well for us, but not in the Bundesliga
for some unknown reason. We can't afford to let things get tight at the bottom of the table."
Schalke’s next game is against Israeli outfit Hapoel Tel Aviv on Tuesday, 2 November, and Magath will be hoping for a positive result in that game, in order to use it as a springboard for a good result against FC St Pauli in the Bundesliga on Friday.
