Schalke defender Christoph Metzelder out of Wolfsburg clash with calf injury
Central defender Christoph Metzelder has been ruled out for the clash against Felix Magath’s Wolfsburg with a calf injury. Die Knappen will face their former manager Magath, who was sacked after a poor run of form last year. The
defender suffered the injury in the UEFA Europa League play-off against HJK Helsinki and will not be available for selection as he faces time on the sidelines.

The tactician admitted that it was a precautionary measure to take Metzelder off at half-time as the medical staff wanted the player to take rest.
“We had to take Christoph Metzelder off at half-time. We had actually intended for him to play a little longer, but his calf was causing him a few problems after 45 minutes so, as a precautionary measure, we decided to rest him
in the second half,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The manager also defended his decision to give the German international a start in the match. He insisted that the aim of the decision was to give match practice to the players who had been absent with injury for a considerable
amount of time.
“The whole aim of it was to give some of our long-term injury absentees match practice,” he concluded.
