Schalke president shocked by 5-0 defeat
Schalke president Clemens Tonnie says that he is shocked after the side fell to a 5-0 defeat against Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga on Saturday 27 November and has demanded an explanation from manager Felix Magath for such a poor result.
Magath's men fell behind after just eight minutes when Srdjan Lakic netted for the home side. Martin Amedick doubled the advantage in the 39th minute before Croatian striker Lakic doubled his tally for the day after half-time.
Ivo Ilicevic scored with a penalty in the 76th minute to make it 4-0 and Jan Moravek completed the rout two minutes from full-time.
The result has left Schalke in 15th spot with just 13 points from 14 games, and they are now under real threat of being relegated at the end of the season. This is in spite of their good form in Europe, which has seen them qualify from their UEFA Champions
League group with a game to spare.
According to German publication Bild, Tonnies said: "I am absolutely shocked by this result. For all the euphoria from the Champions League to be shattered by a newly-promoted team, that is a hammer blow. The coach and manager Felix Magath now has to
explain how we get out of this.
"We are talking about the performance of the team. I have no worries about Schalke getting relegated. But I had and have a much higher expectation in Felix Magath than just survival."
Magath took over at Schalke in the summer of 2009 and helped them to finish in second place in the Bundesliga that season, just five points behind eventual champions Bayern Munich.
However, the former Wolfsburg manager has struggled this season on the domestic stage, having helped Schalke to win just three games so far in the League.
