Schalke chief Clemens Tonnies revealed that his club pulled out of a move for Dutchman, Rafael Van der Vaart.
The Dutchman joined Tottenham from Real Madrid, where he failed to make a solid impact. The Spurs reportedly paid around 8-10 million Euros for the former Hamburg man’s signature.
Van der Vaart quickly established himself as a first team regular and has 24 goals in 61 appearances for the London club. He was a part of that Spurs' side that reached the knock-out round of the UEFA Champions League by beating

After the London side’s failure to secure Champions League football for yet another season, the attacking midfielder was reportedly looking for a transfer. A move back to Bundesliga was on the cards as the playmaker wanted to be

Schalke and Hamburg were rumoured to be interested in signing the 29-year old. The Royal Blues were thought to be leading the chase. Their manager Huub Stevens was recently quoted as saying that he would like to sign the midfielder.
Despite his manager’s claims, Schalke supremo Clemens Tonnies revealed that his club could not reach an agreement with player. Die Knappen were unwilling match the 70,000 pound wages the midfielder’s currently on.
The chief also reckons that if his club were desperate to sign the former Real Madrid man then they would have, but unfortunately they were not.
"If we had really wanted to have him [Van der Vaart], then we would have got him. But it didn't make any sense because we were miles apart. The topic is over." Tonnies is quoted as saying in an interview.
Although the Schalke chairman is aware of Van der Vaart’s quality on the pitch, but he insists that he would not suit his side. He believes the playmaker is not the playmaker the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Royal-95-c40387 Blues are looking for.
"Van der Vaart has very high quality but despite this, he does not fit our requirements on a number of levels," he added.
Schalke’s decision to pull out of a move for the 29-year old leaves Hamburg in poll position to re-sign their former player, who enjoyed a successful spell at the club.
