The Greek youngster plays down Manchester United link and has insisted that he will stay at Schalke.
The 20-year old Greek centre-back has been in tremendous form for his club Schalke 04, who finished third in the Bundesliga last season. He was signed from Olympiacos in the summer of 2010, for a fee reported to be around 2.5 million
Euros. The youngster, who has been tipped to be the future leader of his national side has already made 10 appearances for Fernando Santos’s side.
Fine displays from Papadopoulos in the Bundesliga and UEFA Europa League have attracted interest from several European giants. One club in particular has been mentioned more than others. Rumours have been circulating that the Schalke
starlet is attracting interest from Manchester United.
When asked about the transfer talk, the former Olympiacos man was flattered to be linked with such a prestigious club but was quick to dismiss the rumours as mere speculation.
The Greece international did not hide his desire to play for the ‘Red Devils’ one day, but he also states that he is committed to his current club and the rumours will not distract him from focusing on the ‘Royal Blues’.
“It’s an honour for me to hear that such a big club likes my football, but at the moment I don't know anything about it. Of course I would like to someday play for Manchester United, but I am a player of Schalke and I am focused
on them," he is quoted as saying in an interview.
Papadopoulos, however, is keen to focus on his country’s European campaign, and will not let the rumours affect his performances. As he believes nothing can beat the feeling of representing your country on the international stage.
"I am very happy to be a member of the national team at such a big competition, at my age. I have played a lot of games in European competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League with Schalke, but the feeling here
is unique." he added.
The 2004 European Champions have only picked up a point from their first two fixtures and will look to bounce back against Russia to keep their hopes of qualification to quarter finals alive.
