  1. There are (at least) two ways to do a block schedule.

In one, you do only four courses in the first semester, and four more in the second semester.  This can be a problem, if you have to test at the end of the year (April or May), but you have been finished with a course since Christmas and haven't looked at it since.

In the other pattern, you do four courses on the "A" day, and the other four on the "B" day, alternating, but only doing four on any given day.  This one is sometimes referred to as "AB block."  This one seems to work out better in terms of the end year testing.

Both of these ways get you 8 credits in one school year.  The biggest problem with block scheduling at all, though, is that most of the time, they don't cover as much for the whole year in each subject as would be covered in a traditional school year doing 45-to-60-minute periods with 6 to 8 periods per day.  So you get more credits for less learning.  Teachers like it because they only have to prep for four periods per day instead of 6 or 7.  But they need to prep really well because it's hard to keep 30 teenagers actively engaged in a class for the extended classtimes -- 90-110 minutes or so per class period.

    Good luck!

  2. So is my school. :)

You take 4 classes the first semester, for example:

    Period 1: Algebra II

    Period 2: Physical Education

    lunch

    Period 3: Creative Writing

    Period 4: English II

You take midterms  after the first marking period, and finals at the end of January. Then, you switch to four new classes:

    Period 1: Biology

    Period 2: World History

    lunch

    Period 3: Spanish II

    Period 4: Anthropology

It's different from A/B, because all the classes are everyday for one semester, instead of every other day the whole year. :)
