Schengen tourist visa rejected (German consulate, Chennai, India). Pls advise.?

We're a family of three (my spouse and our 8-year-old son) from India. We applied for a 16-day Schengen Tourist Visa to the German Consulate in Chennai, but got rejected without being provided any reason, whatsoever. Our itinerary included Germany and Switzerland. My question is, is there another Schengen country with easier formalities? Which country would you suggest that we apply next? Most importantly, has the refusal from the German consulate sealed our fate? :-(

This was supposed to be our first trip abroad, and my son was the most excited of all. His disappointed face prompted me to try to salvage the situation somehow. Any valuable help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  2. As entry into one Schengen country essentially allows for movement within the entire Schengen Zone, each of the countries within the zone is supposed to apply the identical criteria when issuing/not issuing Schengen visas. Of course, it is impossible to do so, and some Schengen countries have a reputation of being more lenient in their visa policies, but with a refusal already in the system, it is unlikely that applying elsewhere will be of benefit.  Also, Switzerland in not in the Schengen Zone, and would be an even more difficult visa source.

As it is your first trip abroad, perhaps you should consider another location - for example, Thailand (visas are available at the airport when you arrive if you meet the established guidelines - see below).  After you have established a successful international travel history, future visas elsewhere may not be so elusive.

    For Thailand:

Passport holders from India and 13 other countries may apply for visas at immigration checkpoints for the purpose of tourism for the period of not exceeding 15 days, provided that:

             - The applicant must possess instrument of means of living expenses 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family accordingly.

             - The applicant must produce instrument of means of transport (full paid ticket) which is usable within 15 days since the date of entry.

             - Visa on arrival is provided at 23 designated international checkpoints and applicants should produce the application form to which his/her recent photograph (2 1/4 inches)  is attached. The application fee is 300 Baht.

             - Visitors who enter the Kingdom with Visa on Arrival generally cannot file an application for extension of stay except in special cases.
