  1. No if you have a permanent residence permit for Spain then you can travel freely within the Schengen zone

The other way around - my non-EU husband has a permanent residence here in the Netherlands, but we have travelled through most of the Schengen zone and no problems (after also checking with the embassies concerned first).  The only issue arises is of course for EU countries that are not part of the Schengen zone e.g. for the UK he must obtain a visa first

Also every year we drive from NL to Bosnia and back and therefore travel through Germany, Austria, Slovenia, & Croatia.  On return at passport control in Slovenia, the residence permit plus passport is sufficient for entry.

Therefore no problem, you can visit the Netherlands without a problem, but do bring both your passport and permit.  You must be able to produce official identification at all times if stopped by the police in NL

I also worked as a student advisor for foreign students and so am it was part of my job to be familiar with these laws

  2. Holding a residence permit for Spain, a Schengen country, no visa is required for visiting other Schengen countries

National SOUTH AFRICA (ZA)      /Residence SPAIN (ES)

Embarkation SPAIN (ES)          /Destination NETHERLANDS (NL)

    NETHERLANDS (NL)

    Passport required.

    If holding official residence permit:

    visa not required.

    Visitor must hold:

    - sufficient funds; and

    - ticket for return/onward journey; and

    - all documents required for next destination.

Non-compliance with entry regulations will result in fines up

to EUR 11,250.- per passenger. Carriers transporting aliens

with no or insufficient documentation from unlisted airports

    are also liable to fines.

If you still are in doubt or want to obtain more information, I recommend to get in touch with the Embassy of the Netherlands or one of its consulates in Spain. The following weblink provides the consulate responsible for your Spanish living district. Is is in Dutch and Spanish language.   .

  3. what kind of visa/permit do you have living in spain?

you would need a schengen visa to travel to amsterdam, but i have a feeling that the visa you have for spain will cover that!

  4. SA Embassy or Spanish?

Also look for a SA Consulate where you are. If unsuccessful,

Email the Dept of Home affairs in Pretoria for assistance.
