I'll be going to the Netherlands next month to visit my boyfriend for one week. When I arrive at the Schiphol airport, what am I supposed to show when going through customs? Do they ask you any questions?

  1. You should be more afraid of your local customs when coming back from Amsterdam, knowing to be the biggest drug scene in Europe.

  2. dont be nervous! =)

when you get off the plane you'll be directed through customs, then to baggage pickup...

just have your passport and any connecting plane tickets ready to show the customs official... they might ask you some basic questions like "what is the purpose of your trip to the Netherlands" or "how long are you staying"

  3. Not much reason to be nervous unless you plan to smuggle drugs.

Assuming you have a US Passport and are going as a tourist for only a few weeks, you will go through a quick passport check. You might be asked where you are going in the Netherlands or Europe, and you will have to fill in a form, usually given on the plane, to hand to the immigration agent.  All the signs are in Dutch and English, so be certain you are  in the correct lines, the one for foreigners and not the ones for EU passport holders. Then collect your baggage. Assuming you have nothing to declare, and most tourists do not, go through the green lane and you are out of the airport ready to take the train into Amsterdam or onward to almost anywhere in Europe from the train station in the airport. Based on a number of trips through Schipol, it takes about 15-20 minutes, faster than baggage service at most US airports.

  4. ihad my worst experience at Schiphol airport customs but this was during winter but i think summer will be fine after all the price hikes
